I wanted to continue my education at PhD level but I knew my parents could not financially support me anymore, as they had already paid for my expenses in master degree level. So I started looking for opportunities and I was very lucky to get the PhD position at UiA in Grimstad with enough salary for me to be able to also support my younger sister financially for her master degree at UiA. I also met my husband at UiA and we decided to stay and live in the south of Norway ever since.

Despite having an offer to work as a manager for Bosch in Germany I decided the move to Norway in 2010. This decision was not motivated for the scenery nor the Norwegian cuisine; it was a decision based on the professional opportunities associated to the Norwegian system. With a flat organisation culture and a limited number of soul living in Norway the carrier opportunities are easier to realise.

Proof:  I very recently got appointed CEO of a tech start up: Machine Prognostics AS (partly owned by my current employer: Teknova AS).

International organisations with low Hierarchy create pleasant work environment. There are all kinds of supports to have advance professionally, without any need to scarify your family life. What impressed me mainly is the professional work environment, companies are obliged to be aware of newest technologies as well as newest methods of working, and use them.  There is high level of trust in society, as well as in work environment, believe in it and answer back it by being honest and trustworthy.

After more than one year being here, I can confirm everything that was said to me. I like the work/free time balance, gender equality and free access to education and on top of that comes the quality of life. It is taken very seriously by all and the whole society structure supports it.

Last but not least, the nature here is unbelievable. In one minute you can be at the city working and the next one you are jogging at a beautiful forest path by the lake during a sunny summer afternoon.

During my studies in Lisbon I had the chance to visit Uppsala in 2010 as part of a member activity under the Board of European Students of Technology (BEST). It was during the peak of winter, around mid-February, with temperatures dropping below minus 10 degrees Celsius and the scenery full of snow. I loved it and after two weeks of being immerse in such scenario, I knew I had to come back to the Nordics.

The chance presented itself later 2013, when I got selected for a position in Tampere University of Technology as a researcher and PhD candidate under the FP7 Marie SkƂodowska-Curie MULTI-POS project.

I packed my bags and made my way to my new home, Tampere, Finland.

You can get anywhere by bus. Airports are especially easy to reach as it only takes a single bus (no transfers) to get to the local Tampere international airport of Tampere or the Helsinki-Vantaa airport.

Being surrounded by wonderful nature all year round. Lovely snow during the winters and beautiful night-less days by the lakeside during the Summer.

Public saunas! Fantastic places to relax after a busy week, especially during winter times, when you can enjoy a dip in the cold lake. A particular thing where Tampere excels!

I joined the Nordics because of the endless ‘sea’ of learning opportunities, for living life close to nature, for having the luxury to see the Northern lights on my way home after work – pure magic! The Nordics, and especially Finland, is very popular for its high-quality education and healthcare.

It is the best destination if you appreciate knowledge, education, and you want to develop your career as a health professional.

Likes about the Nordics?

Since I was a child I had the tendency to learn something new every day, while I dreamt to live in a country with snow. Both where fulfilled when I decided to go to Finland, first as an exchange student, and then for Master and Doctoral studies.

Finland is also well-known about its captivating scenery, breath-taking and pure nature, its simple and humble lifestyle.

It has taught me a lot, to respect more the natural resources, the environment, wildlife, to appreciate simplicity and silence, and to stay humble and quite – useful characteristics in personal and professional contexts.
